Experimental infection of the pig with Mycobacterium ulcerans : a novel model for studying the pathogenesis of Buruli ulcer disease
Buruli ulcer (BU) is a slowly progressing, necrotising disease of the skin caused by infection with Mycobacterium ulcerans. Non-ulcerative manifestations are nodules, plaques and oedema, which may progress to ulceration of large parts of the skin. Histopathologically, BU is characterized by coagulative necrosis, fat cell ghosts, epidermal hyperplasia, clusters of extracellular acid fast bacilli (AFB) in the subcutaneous tissue and lack of major inflammatory infiltration. The mode of transmission of BU is not clear and there is only limited information on the early pathogenesis of the disease available.; For evaluating the potential of the pig as experimental infection model for BU, we infected pigs subcutaneously with different doses of M. ulcerans. The infected skin sites were excised 2.5 or 6.5 weeks after infection and processed for histopathological analysis. With doses of 2Ă—107 and 2Ă—106 colony forming units (CFU) we observed the development of nodular lesions that subsequently progressed to ulcerative or plaque-like lesions. At lower inoculation doses signs of infection found after 2.5 weeks had spontaneously resolved at 6.5 weeks. The observed macroscopic and histopathological changes closely resembled those found in M. ulcerans disease in humans.; Our results demonstrate that the pig can be infected with M. ulcerans. Productive infection leads to the development of lesions that closely resemble human BU lesions. The pig infection model therefore has great potential for studying the early pathogenesis of BU and for the development of new therapeutic and prophylactic interventions

Realistic Expanding Source Model for Invariant One-Particle Multiplicity Distributions and Two-Particle Correlations in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
We present a realistic expanding source model with nine parameters that are
necessary and sufficient to describe the main physics occuring during
hydrodynamical freezeout of the excited hadronic matter produced in
relativistic heavy-ion collisions. As a first test of the model, we compare it
to data from central Si + Au collisions at p_lab/A = 14.6 GeV/c measured in
experiment E-802 at the AGS. An overall chi-square per degree of freedom of
1.055 is achieved for a fit to 1416 data points involving invariant pi^+, pi^-,
K^+, and K^- one-particle multiplicity distributions and pi^+ and K^+
two-particle correlations. The 99-percent-confidence region of parameter space
is identified, leading to one-dimensional error estimates on the nine fitted
parameters and other calculated physical quantities. Three of the most
important results are the freezeout temperature, longitudinal proper time, and
baryon density along the symmetry axis. For these we find values of 92.9 +/-
4.4 MeV, 8.2 +/- 2.2 fm/c, and 0.0222 + 0.0096 / - 0.0069 fm^-3, respectively.Comment: 37 pages and 12 figures. RevTeX 3.0. Submitted to Physical Review C.

On the Equation of State of Nuclear Matter in 158A GeV Pb+Pb Collisions
Within a hydrodynamical approach we investigate the sensitivity of single
inclusive momentum spectra of hadrons in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions to three
different equations of state of nuclear matter. Two of the equations of state
are based on lattice QCD results and include a phase transition to a
quark-gluon plasma. The third equation of state has been extracted from the
microscopic transport code RQMD under the assumption of complete local
thermalization. All three equations of state provide reasonable fits to data
taken by the NA44 and NA49 Collaborations. The initial conditions before the
evolution of the fireballs and the space-time evolution pictures differ
dramatically for the three equations of state when the same freeze-out
temperature is used in all calculations. However, the softest of the equations
of state results in transverse mass spectra that are too steep in the central
rapidity region. We conclude that the transverse particle momenta are
determined by the effective softness of the equation of state during the

Effect of Fuel on Performance of a Single Combustor of an I-16 Turbojet Engine at Simulated Altitude Conditions
As part of a study of the effects of fuel composition on the combustor performance of a turbojet engine, an investigation was made in a single I-16 combustor with the standard I-16 injection nozzle, supplied by the engine manufacturer, at simulated altitude conditions. The 10 fuels investigated included hydrocarbons of the paraffin olefin, naphthene, and aromatic classes having a boiling range from 113 degrees to 655 degrees F. They were hot-acid octane, diisobutylene, methylcyclohexane, benzene, xylene, 62-octane gasoline, kerosene, solvent 2, and Diesel fuel oil. The fuels were tested at combustor conditions simulating I-16 turbojet operation at an altitude of 45,000 feet and at a rotor speed of 12,200 rpm. At these conditions the combustor-inlet air temperature, static pressure, and velocity were 60 degrees F., 12.3 inches of mercury absolute, and 112 feet per second respectively, and were held approximately constant for the investigation. The reproducibility of the data is shown by check runs taken each day during the investigation. The combustion in the exhaust elbow was visually observed for each fuel investigated
Nucleon distribution amplitudes from lattice QCD
We calculate low moments of the leading-twist and next-to-leading twist
nucleon distribution amplitudes on the lattice using two flavors of clover
fermions. The results are presented in the MSbar scheme at a scale of 2 GeV and
can be immediately applied in phenomenological studies. We find that the
deviation of the leading-twist nucleon distribution amplitude from its
asymptotic form is less pronounced than sometimes claimed in the literature.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. RevTeX style. Normalization for

Hydrodynamical analysis of symmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN/SPS energies
We present a coherent theoretical study of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion data
obtained at the CERN/SPS by the NA35/NA49 Collaborations using 3+1-dimensional
relativistic hydrodynamics. We find excellent agreement with the rapidity
spectra of negative hadrons and protons and with the correlation measurements
in two experiments: at 200 and at 160 (preliminary
results). Within our model this implies that for () a
quark-gluon-plasma of initial volume 174 (24 ) with a lifetime 3.4
(1.5 ) was formed. It is found that the Bose-Einstein correlation
measurements do not determine the maximal effective radii of the hadron sources
because of the large contributions from resonance decay at small momenta. Also
within this study we present an NA49 acceptance corrected two-pion

Approach to Perturbative Results in the N-Delta Transition
We show that constraints from perturbative QCD calculations play a role in
the nucleon to Delta(1232) electromagnetic transition even at moderate momentum
transfer scales. The pQCD constraints, tied to real photoproduction data and
unseparated resonance response functions, lead to explicit forms for the
helicity amplitudes wherein the E2/M1 ratio remains small at moderately large
